Maala-ala Mo Kaya - Filipino Classic Song (Lyrics and Video)

Maala-ala Mo Kaya
Filipino Classic Song

Huwag mong sabihing ika'y hamak
Kahit na isang mahirap
Pagka't ang tangi kong pag-ibig
Ganyan ang hinahanap

Aanhin ko ang kayamanan
Kung ang puso'y salawahan
Ang nais ko'y pag-ibig na tunay
At walang kamatayan

English Translation
Would you remember your oath to me
that your love would never gone.

If you want to know, open my heart
Only your picture is hidden there.

Wouldn't your love change?
Would you really be my love till the grave?

O, how sweet life is, especially with somebody to love
The happiness in my heart will never vanish.

Filipino Kundiman: Bituing Marikit - Leopoldo Silos

In the sweeping rhythm of a Danza, the song depicts a passionate lover who compares the beloved to an "unreachable star shining in the night of life," who begs "to be thrown a ray of light, or be allowed to drink from the pure stream of love." This Kundiman was composed by Prof. Nicanor Abelardo in 1926 for the Tagalog sarswela "Dakilang Punglo". The lyrics was written by Servando de los Reyes. In 1937 Sampaguita Pictures used this Kundiman in the movie "Bituing Marikit" by Carlos Tolosa, starring Elsa Oria.

Audio from a vinyl phonograph LP recording ("Madaling Araw and Other Outstanding Kundiman, The Villar Symphonette conducted by Leopoldo Silos," Villar Records, MLP 5037-S Mareco Incorporated, Quezon City, Philippines, Undated).

Kundiman: Pakiusap - Arrigo Pola (1952)

Pakiusap - Arrigo Pola (1952) Filipino Kundiman
A breath-taking timeless Kundiman art song, 'Pakiusap' was composed by the late Dr. Francisco Santiago in 1921. With its articulate words written by Jesus Balmori and Jose Corazon De Jesus, it expresses the anguish contained in the plea of a loving heart that begs to be heard and answered. This "hauntingly beautiful" Kundiman art song is now indelibly associated with Santiago's name.

Interpreted by one of the best Italian tenor, the late Arrigo Pola (b.1919 -d.1999) with musical accompaniment by by Dominic Salustiano and the Regtar Symphony Orchestra. Audio from a vintage 78 RPM shellac recording ("Pakiusap, Sung by Arrigo Pola," Regtar Record, R-R6 A, Philippines).

ARRIGO POLA IN THE PHILIPPINES

Arrigo Pola was born in Modena, Italy in 1919. Pola is one of the most acclaimed tenors in the world. A distinguished music teacher, he was voice teacher of Luciano Pavarotti. Pola arrived in the Philippines in 1951 and became instantly popular with the Filipino audience. In a short period of time, Pola mastered Tagalog Kundiman songs to the delight of the Filipinos.

In 1952, Pola recorded popular Kundiman Art songs like 'Pakiusap', 'Ang Dating Sumpaan', 'Kundiman 1800', 'Anak ng Dalita', and 'Magbalik Ka Hirang', all of which were beautifully interpreted. Hearing these Kundiman songs rendered by an Italian tenor was a marvelous experience for Filipino audiences.

Pola's popularity in the Philippines became widespread and he was invited to many important musical performances including singing engagements at the Malacañang Palace, with no less than Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay as audience.

Arrigo Pola stayed in the Philippines for three years from 1951 to 1954.

Filipino Kundiman: Alinmang Lahi by Dr. Jose Rizal sung by Conching Rosal

ALINMANG LAHI
Kundiman composed by José Rizal
Lyrics

Alin mang lahi, insinasanggalang
Sa lupit ang kaniyang lupang tinubuan
Tuloy pinaghahandugan
Ng buhay at dugo kung kailangan.

Ang kamatayan man, kung saka-sakali't
Igiginhawa ng mga kalahi
Tatanggapin ng may ngiti
Kaaliwa't tuwang 'di mumunti

Nguni't pagkasawing-palad yata
Ng Katagalugang napapanganyaya
Bukod pa sa ibang umaaba
Lalung nagbibigay hapis ang ibang kapwa.

Sabagay 'di kulang sa pupuhunanin
Lakas, dunong, tapang, yaman ay gayundin
Aywan kung bakit at inaalipin
Ng bawa't lahing makasuno natin.
